This is a practical follow up to Neutralizing our inner food critic. Now that we know that food isn’t the be-all and end-all of health, it’s time to silence that food critic. Here are some responses to some typical inner food critic thoughts.

Thought: It’s okay to eat carbs in fruit and veg but I should restrict bread, pasta and potatoes

Response: Starchy carbohydrates provide me with fiber for my gut health and B vitamins which are needed for our body’s metabolism

Thought: Fats have no nutrition and will make me gain weight  

Response: Fat is required in the diet to help us to absorb fat-soluble vitamins: A, D, E, and K. 

Thought: I should avoid all food with sugar

Response: Sugar satisfies my sweet tooth and stops cravings from taking over my life


Thought: There is no place in my diet for “unhealthy food”

Response: No individual food is going to make me unhealthy (or healthy for that matter)

Thought: It’s unnatural to eat dairy

Response: Dairy provides our bones with calcium, our nervous system with vitamin B12 and provides iodine which is needed to form essential hormones
